****** Professor Rick Schroeder – “Joining the Ranks: Part I” ******
****** Geography Grad Lounge (B231) Lucy Stone Hall ******
****** 2.15 this Friday, October 2nd ******
Snacks and soda will be provided so come in for Ken’s Brownbag talk and stay for this!
Rick will give his now famous (within this department at least) talk on how to successfully get that academic job. In this part I of the talk he plans to cover a number of issues including: how to prepare to make an application, the broader question of professionalization, how to build a cv, how to build a teaching portfolio and the nature of credentials in a tight job market.
There is a second part of the talk which covers the on campus interview, the job talk, getting the job offer etc. but unless he gets through it all very quickly we will probably be holding that over for a second session later in the semester. Even if the job market seems like something that is several years down the road or if you don’t plan on going for an academic job I think this will still be worth attending.
Now is also a good time to mention our plans for the professional development forum for the rest of this semester. We are still figuring out the details but hopefully the rest of the semester will include:
***** “Writing your proposal” ******
A workshop where grad students share their experiences and advice on writing both your dissertation proposal and proposals for external funding
***** “Joining the Ranks: Part II” *****
The second half of Rick’s talk
***** “Demystifying the Qualifying Exams” ******
Those of us who have taken on the dreaded qualifiers and survived to tell the tale, give the rest of you some suggestions and everything from selecting committee members through to surviving the oral exam.
Hope to see you all on Friday,
Jim & Nate
